Amazon AWS opens first India Datacenter in Mumbai

Amazon’s cloud computing arm Amazon Web Services has introduced it’s first ever datacenter infrastructure in India in the Mumbai Region. Amazon aims to expand it’s global footprint with the introduction of the new Datacenter. AWS customers in the area can use the new Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region to better serve end users in India. The new Mumbai region has two Availability Zones, raising the global total to 35. It supports Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) (C4, M4, T2, D2, I2, and R3 instances are available) and related services including Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, Auto Scaling, and Elastic Load Balancing. There are now three edge locations (Mumbai, Chennai, and New Delhi) in India.

Amazon has over 75000 active customers in India representing a diverse base of Industries. With thousands of active customers in India, Amazon had announced its intention to launch datacenters in the region last year.

“Indian start-ups and enterprises have been using AWS for many years – with most Indian technology start-ups building their entire businesses on AWS, and numerous enterprises running mission-critical, core applications on AWS,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS. “These same 75,000 Indian customers, along with others anxious to start using AWS, have asked for an India Region so they can move their applications that require low latency and data sovereignty. We’re excited to make this available today, with the same pay-as-you-go pricing, ability to get started immediately without having to negotiate enterprise agreements or wait days for access, and unmatched functionality that customers enjoy in AWS Regions worldwide – all of which allows customers to go from idea to launch faster than ever before was possible.”

The AWS Cloud operates 35 Availability Zones within 13 geographic Regions around the world, with 9 more Availability Zones and 4 more Regions coming online throughout the next year.

Some of the biggest AWS customers in India are

  • OLA Cabs
  • NDTV
  • Tata Motor Ltd.
  • redBus
  • Hotstar
  • Macmillan India

Amazon has opened six offices in India since 2011 – Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai. These offices support the diverse customer base in India including enterprises, government agencies, academic institutions, small-to-mid-size companies, startups, and developers.
